The Ultimate Period-Friendly Camping List

Lace up your hiking boots, pack your backpack, Spring is finally here and we're GOING OUTSIDE!

Getting your period? NBD! Periods don't have to stop you from enjoying all that nature has to offer. Whether you're going on a day hike or a multi-night trek, here's everything you should pack for adventuring while menstruating.

Pack a "Go Kit"

Bring prepared for your period is the most important part. Your kit should include everything you need to stay leak-free and comfortable, all while leaving no trace.

  1. Period products (whatever products you prefer to use!)
  2. Waste bags or containers
  3. Toilet paper
  4. Hand sanitizer or soap
  5. Extra undies in case of leaks!

Tampons & Pads

If you prefer to use tampons or pads on your period, make sure you pack enough for the length of your adventure. These products must leave with you - do not bury used period products or leave them in nature!

Create a waste bag or container to pack out your used period products:

  1. A ziploc bag wrapped in duct tape or lined with aluminum foil
  2. A container with a sealable cap; an old water bottle is a good option!

Cups & Discs

Menstrual Cups & Discs are a great zero-waste option for hiking and camping because you can leave them in all day long! Dispose of the contents of your cup/disc in a cathole (at least 200 feet from any body of water), and use a plant-based wash to clean your cup between uses.

note: never use soap directly in a water source.

Dress Strategically

Your clothing can make a big difference. Wear dark-colored clothing that won't show potential leaks. Choose moisture-wicking fabrics that dry quickly. Layer up so you can readjust for temperature fluctuations (hormonal changes can affect how you experience temperature).

Try out Gnara apparel with a GoFly zipper, which makes bathroom breaks significantly easier while wearing a pack or harness (and perfect for changing your tampon or menstrual cup).
