What are the Toxins in Menstrual Products Doing to Your Body?

By Leanne Barbarito

If you weren’t aware, many menstrual products contain toxins that are harming your body.  The long-term health issues associated with these toxins are life threatening.

Most products that claim they are cotton, are actually made out of a fiber called rayon.  Rayon can cause irritation and comes with the risk of carrying other chemicals like carbon disulfide, toluene, and xylene, which are all reproductive toxins.

In addition to the toxins mentioned, methylene chloride is commonly found in menstrual products.  Methylene Chloride is used in the process of manufacturing rayon, but is also commonly known for its use as a paint stripper and thinner.

You may be wondering why all of these products are still being produced and how most menstruators aren't more aware of this.  The main reason is that menstrual products are not required to provide ingredient information and allergens on packaging.

The vagina is the most absorbent part of our bodies, which makes it extremely sensitive to these chemicals. The toxins that are absorbed can put you at risk for illnesses such as cancer, reproductive issues, and can negatively affect your hormones.

What now?

Now that you know about the risks associated with menstrual products containing toxins, it's important to be aware of what you are putting in your body.  Do your research on new products and find brands that are more open with their ingredient list.

Look for products that are bpa-free, toxin-free, and plant-derived.  Here's our go to tampons
