What are the Benefits of Using a Period Cup?
So you've heard of them, but now you're wondering: Why use a menstrual cup? What are the benefits compared to other period products like tampons and pads? Is it really worth the learning curve? Today we're talking through some of my favorite parts about using a cup (warning: you might be convinced to make the switch by the end of this article)
Cost
A menstrual cup is a one-time purchase that can last years - like seriously, with proper care, a Viv Cup can last up to 10 years (!!!). The Viv Cup is just $20, which is how much I used to spend on tampons & pads in 2 months. Over time, the cup saves thousands of dollars, so definitely worth the investment.
Comfort
A lot of people (who have never used a cup) are surprised to hear that they're so comfortable. You can't feel the cup at all when it's in the right place, and I would argue that it's even more comfortable than tampons, in my experience. The way the cup captures instead of absorbing has really reduced my cramping. I've used my cup in pretty much every situation - at work, at the beach, going for a run, going to a dance class, and I've never even felt it!!
Sustainability
Did you know that one traditional pad contains as much plastic as 4 plastic bags?! That's a ton of waste, especially when you think about how many disposable period products we use in our lifetime. With the cup, there's no waste created, because you can reuse the same cup over and over! My bathroom trash can has never been emptier, which makes me feel great about my environmental impact.
Safety
It's craaazy that we even have to worry about the safety of our period products, but unfortunately that is the reality. There seems to be a new study coming out every week about crazy chemicals and toxins in tampons and pads. Although there are great, safe options like Viv Tampons and Pads, using the cup takes the worry away completely. The Viv Cup is made of 100% medical-grade silicone, so it's completely safe, and I can feel confident in knowing my body isn't being exposed to any crazy toxins.
Capacity
The Viv Cup holds as much as 3-5 tampons or pads. As someone with a pretty heavy period, especially on days 1 and 2, I absolutely HATE how often I have to change a tampon. It's so exhausted to constantly be worrying about leaks, and not being able to wear my favorite outfits because of the potential for a pad to shift or a tampon to leak and ruin it. The Viv Cup holds SO much, it honestly shocks me. I can leave the cup in all day (like, 10 hours) without leaking most of the time. As someone who used to change tampons every 2ish hours, it has completely changed my life.
Convenience
While learning how to use a cup for the first time might take a little longer than pads or tampons, once you get used to it, it honestly might be easier than the alternatives. The best part? The cup lasts so long, so you don't need to think about it most of the time. I frequently forget that I'm even on my period because it's just in there doing its job. No leaks, no cramps, and it lasts all day long. Having a period is pretty annoying tbh, but using a cup has made it so much more manageable. I use the Viv Cup Wash to clean it (I just leave it in my shower and rinse it when I take it out at the end of the day), and store it in the little storage pouch that comes in the Viv Cup Starter Kit.
I could gush (there's a pun there somewhere) about the Viv Cup all day long, about how it has completely changed my life and completely changed how I feel about having a period, but the only real way for you to get it is to try the cup yourself!! Using a completely new period product may seem intimidating, but it's so much easier to use than you might think. And Viv is here to coach you through the whole process!
