Using Prime Day for Good: A Conscious Consumer's Guide to Amazon Prime Day

It's Amazon Prime Day, a.k.a. one of the biggest shopping days of the year. With almost everything on Amazon being on sale, and almost every product you could ever imagine being available on Amazon, it's easy to get sucked into the world of overconsumption and end up with a bunch of things you don't really need.

Whether you're trying to be a conscious consumer because your wallet needs you to be, or if you're trying to make better sustainable choices for the earth, we're here to help.

Use this as a check point. Take a deep breath, and keep these things in mind as you shop this week:

1. Use prime day to stock up on things you actually need

Check your kitchen, your bathroom, your laundry & cleaning supplies. Take inventory & make a list of the things you know you use that you're running out of. Then check to see if there are any sustainable or small businesses you'd like to try.

Our pick? Period care from Viv. Eco-friendly, ultra-soft pads, organic cotton tampons, and a beginner-friendly reusable menstrual cup. There's never a bad time to stock up on period products, and Prime Day is a great opportunity to choose a better-for-you option!

2. Resist Impulse Buying with Day 2 of Prime Day

Amazon Prime Day is July 16th and July 17th this year! Use the 16th to add everything to your cart, but don't hit Buy yet! Wait a day, come back on the 17th and check out your cart. Chances are, there's something you don't actually want or need, or there's a better-for-you, more sustainable option you can swap out. Waiting & giving your purchases some thought is the first step to combatting impulse buys!

3. Think Long-Term

I know the Amazon haul influencers will convince you that you just neeeed to get a set of 5 identical tank tops, or a specific pair of socks, or a pair of shorts that are soooo in right now. But before stock piling all the latest micro trends, think about yourself 1 year from now. Will these articles of clothing still fit your personal style, or are you buying them just because everyone else is right now?

It's ok to pick and choose which trends you hop onto. The goal should be to buy as little clothing as possible, and be able to wear (and love) all your clothes for years to come. Doesn't sound like that tank top set fits that description? Maybe take it out of your cart.

4. Shop Small & Impactful

There are thousands of small and sustainable brands on Amazon!! While sometimes sustainable products can be more expensive than traditional, big-brand options (because the quality is much better), prime day is a great opportunity to use sales for good. Instead of buying the Amazon basic, or big-box option, check out some of those smaller, eco-conscious brands you've seen on TikTok or Instagram. They're probably running some pretty big Prime Day sales that bump their products into your price range!!

Shopping from a smaller brand is a great way to support the people behind the products. Selling on Amazon allows them to reach more people & be more accessible, and shopping from them shows that you support their mission.
