How to Insert a Menstrual Disc
If you're new to the world of menstrual discs, you're probably looking at it wondering how the heck it will fit inside your body - and comfortably?! Believe it or not, menstrual discs are completely comfortable and keep you leak-free for up to 12 hours when inserted correctly!
Many people find menstrual discs easier to insert than menstrual cups because they're very simple. Here are the basic steps to follow to insert a menstrual disc:
- wash your hands and your disc
- pinch the disc lengthwise to form an "8" shape
- choose a position: sitting on the toilet, squatting, or standing with one leg up
- insert the disc into your vagina, angled back towards your tailbone, with the opening of the disc facing up and the pull tab at the bottom
- use your thumb or finger to tuck the rim of the disc behind your pubic bone
Having trouble inserting your disc? We're here to give you all the pro tips. Like any period product, learning how to use a disc for the first time might take a few tries.
Pinch your round menstrual disc in the middle so it looks like the number 8.
All menstrual discs insert in this way. If you're looking for an easy-to-use menstrual disc that is designed with beginners in mind, check out the Viv Disc Starter Kit.
Keep the disc folded as you slide it into your vagina.
Pinch the top of the disc to start, so the insertion point is small. Then, continue to pinch the disc as you "walk" the disc into your body. Pinch and slide the disc in until the disc is all the way inside.
The angle that you insert the disc makes a huge difference - for comfort & effectiveness.
When inserting, don't think about going straight up. Vaginas do not go straight up and down, they're at an angle towards your tailbone. Following the natural angle of your vagina will make insertion much more comfortable. Insert your disc back towards the bottom of your spine, and try a few different angles until you find what works for your body.
Use a finger to tuck your disc behind your pubic bone.
If your disc is leaking right away, coming out, for feels uncomfortable, it's probably not resting behind your pubic bone the way it should.
After you've pinched & guided your disc into your body, use a finger to reach up and push your disc into the correct place. Discs sit higher than a tampon or a menstrual cup, so don't be alarmed if it feels like it's super far up inside you!! That means you've inserted it correctly.
The disc rests on top of your pubic bone. Because it doesn't use any suction, this is how it stays secure & in place. If it isn't tucked into the correct place, the disc can slip down or get knocked out of place (helloooo leaking!).
Insert your disc in the shower
The first few times (or all the time), insert your disc in the shower. That way, any leaks that happen while you're inserting it can just wash down the drain!
If you feel more comfortable sitting on the toilet while you insert, that works too! Make sure you're positioned completely over the toilet to catch any leaks, and remember: period blood is just period blood! It's completely normal for it to get on your hands or leak a little, especially when you're learning how to use a new product. That's why we wash our hands before and after :)
