Are any tampons safe? Here’s what we know.
Tampons have been a reliable and convenient period product since their invention in 1931. With more and more information coming out about the harmful ingredients and potential toxins in many different tampons, you may be wondering: are tampons actually safe? What is the safest option out there?
A study released in July 2024 found heavy metals including lead, and concerning chemicals like arsenic, in all of the most commonly found tampon brands. Hysteria on the internet ensued, as most people with periods don't think twice about the potential risks when using tampons every month!
The vagina is one of the most absorbent parts of our bodies, so anything you put in or on your vagina should be safe and toxin-free. The good news? There are safe tampon options out there!
Viv Tampons are completely toxin-free, and go through rigorous testing to make sure you can trust them when you use them every month! The only ingredient in Viv Tampons is certified organic cotton. No additions, no plastic, no metal, no chemicals, just absorbent organic cotton.
In the manufacturing process, Viv Tampons are subjected to multiple types of testing to ensure they're the safest tampons available, including the following:
- A Trace Chemical Report is requested at first material validation along with OEKO-TEX certification (certifies non-hazardous)
- Finished Viv tampon products are annually controlled following EDANA’s Stewardship program
- A strict EBRA (Exposure Based Risk Assessment) is also conducted on Viv tampons. This assessment tests if any heavy metal is detected, even below acceptance value. This includes worst case scenario exposure: 100% migration through the tampon, 100% transfer through the membrane, and 100% bioavailability assessments.
- Viv tampons also go through Biocompatibility Testing: each raw material that comes into direct contact with the skin is subjected to biocompatibility testing, focusing on cytotoxicity, sensitization, and skin irritation, ensuring our products are safe for prolonged use on sensitive skin. Viv tampons are tested for biological hazards on the finished article as well as the acute systemic toxicity.
- There are NO additional metal compounds added to our tampons (that some brands use to enhance product characteristics like odor control or lubrication). This ensures the product is as free from contaminants as possible.
The good news about switching to Viv Tampons - they might make you feel better & be more comfortable too!! There is evidence that switching to 100% organic tampons reduces cramps & overall period pain over time. You can feel confident & safe while continuing to use a period product you love!
