How to Prepare for Getting Your First Period at School
It's back to school season, and besides new classes, new teachers, and new friends, the school year marks a new beginning! So many exciting things are to come this year, and one of them might be (don't panic) your first period! If you haven't gotten your first period yet, we're here to help you prepare. The more you know, the less scary it will be when it comes, even if it happens while you're at school
Preparing to have your period at school
Whether you get your period every month, or haven't had your first period yet, making a period kit is a great way to be prepared. Keep this kit in your backpack, in your locker, or wherever it'll be easily accessible if you feel a cramp coming on in the middle of class. In your kit, stock some of your favorite period products. If you're not sure what to pack, we suggest starting with a few Viv Winged Pads and Viv Liners. Pack 3-5 of each, to get you through the day (or a few!) if you get your period unexpectedly. Besides period products, you may want to pack some Advil or pain killers to help ease cramps, and remember to drink plenty of water and fuel your body with food throughout the day to keep your body feeling strong & hydrated!
What to do if you get your first period at school
Getting your first period can be scary, but if you are prepared, it'll be NBD. Getting your period can feel like any other discharge, it may feel like more or a different, warm consistency than regular discharge. If you suspect you got your period, head to the bathroom (and don't forget to bring the period kit we just talked about!!).
If your suspicions were true and you did get your period, first, take a deep breath. Getting your first period can bring on some strong emotions. You might feel scared, annoyed, excited, confused, panicky, relieved, or everything all at once! Know that however you're feeling is okay, and you're allowed to feel however you want about this new experience.
Once you're in the bathroom, it's time to use a pad for the first time! To keep yourself extra protected, we suggest using a winged pad, even if it doesn't seem like too much blood. Periods can be unpredictable, and it's better to be extra protected than the alternative!
If you're looking for help on using pads (or any period product) or if you have any questions, head to Viv's TikTok @vivforyourv. We have hundreds of videos guiding you through how to use each period product, and we're here to be the big sister you need to help answer all of your period questions!
Once your pad is stuck to your underwear, remember to wash your hands, and you can return to class! It might feel strange knowing you have a pad on, but as you get used to it, it will soon feel like nothing's there (especially if you use comfortable pads like Viv's). Your first period might last anywhere from 2-7 days, and it may take a while before your period is regular and you know what to expect. Until then, keep your period kit stocked and with you, so you're ready whenever you need it!
Our favorite period products to use at school
Our #1 tip for getting your period at school is to use comfortable and extra absorbent products to reduce the chance of leaks & make sure you're comfortable throughout the day. You shouldn't have to worry about your pad shifting out of place, or leaking through your clothes, which is why we always recommend Viv pads & liners. They're completely toxin-free (traditional period products have some pretty crazy chemicals in them, and it's better to reduce your exposure to them), and they're 4 times more absorbent than other pads!
