How Can Covid-19 Affect Your Menstrual Cycle?

By Leanne Barbarito

This past year and a half has been challenging for everyone.  Learning to cope with something none of us have ever experienced has definitely been difficult and has impacted nearly every aspect of our lives.  Have you thought about how Covid-19 is affecting your period?

Has my period changed this past year and a half?

For most, stress levels were at an all time high during this time.  This can lead to delayed or missed periods.  I know that it can be difficult to decompress when there's so much uncertainty, but it's so important for your overall health to find coping mechanisms to not overthink as much.

How is your period affected if you get sick?

Not only is your period affected due to the stress levels, but you may see changes in your menstrual cycle if you happen to get Covid-19.  Some people reported more clotting and irregular periods.  This happened to people with long Covid symptoms, having Covid symptoms months after infection.

Does the vaccine affect your period?

Many menstruators are reporting that the first period after their vaccination is a little heavier than normal.  Some people have said that they had cramps as well, when they normally don't. This eventually balances out and goes back to normal!
