Celebrating The First Menstruator Vice President
Let’s be real, you don’t have to be a genius to realize that since the American political system was first founded forever ago it has largely been dominated by old dusty white men creating the same power narrative over and over again. But this year we are shattering this narrative as we celebrate the long awaited first womxn vice president (drum roll please), Kamala Harris! 2020 may have been a shitshow but we are so ready to rewrite the story of American politics in 2021. Not only is she the first ever womxn vice president, but she is also the first VP that has menstruated! Not to mention, Kamala is also the highest ranking female elected in US history and is the first vice president that is African American and Asian American. Um can you say changemaker? Let’s get to know our new trailblazing VP!
Starting with the basics, Kamala was born in Oakland, CA. After attending Howard University and going to law school, her career took off when she took a job in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. From there, she moved to the bustling city of San Francisco where she worked in multiple District Attorney’s Offices. She was well known for her vibrant personality and hard working spirit, so it was no surprise in 2003 when she was elected district attorney of San Francisco. Another big breakthrough in her career came in 2010 when she became the Attorney General of California. In 2016, Kamala helped bring more diversity to American politics when she became the second African American womxn and the first South Asian American to serve in the US senate. Go Kamala! Most recently, in August 2020, Joe Biden chose Kamala as his running mate after she dropped out of the presidential race before the primaries. In November of 2020, our girl Kamala Harris and Joe Biden won the election, making history.
Ok, now it’s time to get juicy! Did you know that Kamala Harris’ first name means lotus? This is a nod to her Asian American heritage as the name “Kamala” also refers to the Hindu Goddess, Lakshmi–– a symbol of female empowerment. Another thing you probably didn’t know about our *totally* dope VP is that she’s kinda a bookie. Some of her favorite books are The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, Native Son by Richard Wright, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, and many others. Kamala also isn’t afraid to stand on her own: she got married for the first time when she was 49 years old. At the same time, she isn’t afraid to stand up for the love of others as she refused to defend Proposition 8 in California (which banned same-sex marriage) and she even stepped up to officiate the wedding of the couple who filed to overturn the proposition.
So yeah, Kamala Harris is a total badass. We are obsessed and are so excited for the menstruator community to feel empowered by seeing a womxn who shares their experience of having a menstruating body step into a position of power unlike any other role menstruators have fulfilled in the United States government. She is not only a beacon of light for the menstruator community, but the African American and Asian American communities as well as she revolutionizes the face of the American political system. Let’s hear it for Kamala!
